4. Historical tidbit about Savannah - We saw the gorgeous Green-Meldrim House which is now the Parish House of the St. Johns Episcopal Church next door. This was where General Sherman of the Union Army had his headquarters for 6 weeks. He wrote President Lincoln a telegram and said he was presenting Savannah as a Christmas gift to him! It was in this house that Sherman and Secretary of War, Edwin Stanton, met with 20 black leaders and asked them what their understanding of the Emancipation Proclamation was. They had great answers. Read this short article to get the history of 40 Acres and a Mule. A very interesting fact is that Skidaway Island (where we attended my cousins trumpet concert) was colonized by 1,000 blacks led by Rev. Ulysses Houston, pastor of First Bryan Baptist Church, as Governor. By the way, the First African Baptist Church is the oldest African American church in the USA.
