The men, all in their early twenties, were arrested Monday. They allegedly attacked Africans walking in South Tel Aviv, beating them with bottles and sticks, “using great cruelty,” police reportedly said. Robbing the Africans was not a priority for the men, who out of racial hatred primarily wanted to terrorize the African refugee community. The robberies were an afterthought. In April, police in Tel Aviv arrested five other Israeli males, two of them minors, for carrying out a series of similar attacks on African refugees in south Tel Aviv. But in two of those incidents, the arrested men mistakenly beat Ethiopian Jews – including one who was so badly beaten, he was hospitalized with a head injury. In January, police in Eilat arrested a group of four Israeli men, one a minor and another an active duty IDF soldier, who allegedly carried out a string of similar attacks on African migrants there. In each of those incidents, the Africans were so badly beaten that hd to be hospitalized. There have also been other attacks, including the racially-based arsons of an occupied kindergarten/daycare center for African refugee children in Tel Aviv and of four other homes there occupied by African refugees. Prosecutors gave the assailant a plea deal that sentenced him to 6 months of community service and no jail time, even though the fires almost killed occupants, including sleeping children.
