4 KEYS TO LEADERSHIP Key # 1 Know your Assignment: • What are you supposed to do in life? How are you walking and working in that assignment? If you are leading and do not know or understand your unique assignment in life you are destined for failure and so are the ones who are following you. Your followers respect a coach who can step up to the blackboard of life and detail the offensive and defensive schemes that he intends to use so the team can be successful. When you are leading the ones who are following, their lives are in your hands. So it is very important to know what your unique assignment is because your family, business or organization is riding on your leadership. Key #2 Set deadlines and know your priorities: • Be organized when you meet with your staff. Set your agenda in advance: what you expect from your staff and how you will communicate the direction you want them to take. Always lead with questions, a thought or an idea. Keep their minds moving and thinking. Everything you say and do demonstrate strong leadership skills in organization, presentation, and motivation. Key # 3 Get your staff’s attention: • Be precise in setting team goals and empowering your players to set attainable personal goals and team goals that are motivating and rewarding. Write them down!!!!!!!!!! Key #4 Give your staff energy: • It is essential to prepare a written job description for each staff member (The job description is not to box them in or dominate them) but simply to have guiding principles to aide during those blank spots throughout the organization. The staff must have a clear cut understanding of their job in order to run with it. Without such direction from the coach, they will always be wondering what is expected of them. Allow the staff to participate in the practice planning and to provide input in game strategies.
