4 MSUans attend JENESYS ASEAN 2.0 Four students from Mindanao State University – Main campus attended the recently-held Japan East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youth (JENESYS) ASEAN 2.0: Mindanao Peace and Community Development Course in Japan last September 24 to October 2. International Relations students Idyll Canete, Abdul Hatta Derico, and Abdulwahid Panganting, together with Adrian Jose Sacan, Chemistry student, passed the series of application and screening processes conducted by the National Youth Commission and the organizer, Japan Overseas Cooperation Association. “Being chosen as one of the delegates of the JENESYS 2.0 Mindanao and Community Development Course is indeed once in a lifetime. I was very honored, overwhelmed and touched as soon as I received the official acceptance letter. It gave me a chance to represent my institution – the MSU, my homeland – the Mindanao, and my country – the Philippines, in general,” Derico said. Participants were given the chance to have a tour on several historical and institutional sites in Japan like the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, Peace Memorial Park, National Peace Memorial Halls for Atomic Bomb Victims, the Atomic Bomb Dome, Mazda Museum, Miyajima, Akihabara, and Shukkeien. The 10-day program hosted by the Japan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is aimed to impart greater understanding and appreciation of each country’s historical and cultural backgrounds, lifestyle, and the way of thinking. Also, it is aimed to revitalize Japanese economy through introduction of Japan’s attractions, promoting international understanding on the nation’s potential strength, allure, and values including the ‘Cool Japan’ concept. “The Japan experience proved that language will never become a barrier for people of different races to interact and care for one another. Though it’s difficult to communicate with them, their warm welcome and pretty smiles were felt. Truly, actions speak louder than words,” Canete quoted.
