4-One Community Spotlight We love Wednesdays, as we love giving our fans a chance to shine. This weeks post goes to Ramon, who summed up our generation of gamers in their current state. We joked about it on Monday, but now its official. Its Ramon Appreciation Day. Great fan, great write-up! This past nine months of gaming news has really given me an insight into the term perceived value, and how it differs from person to person. With the release of the new consoles, weve had more launch titles to play than any other console in history, not even the PS2 had so many. We have games that range from 9hrs of gameplay to over 100hrs. Games are no more expensive now than they were in the NES days, and are actually cheaper than in the SNES/Genesis days. (Although its kind of a tie right now in Canada). Although the prices arent any higher, we now have multiple worlds to explore, games that have entire vocal conversations, actors portraying roles, A list actors voicing and mo-capping our games, customization, whole cities and and countries to explore. Our consoles arent much more expensive than some of their predecessors, but they now play movies, MP3s (in some cases) play back pictures and video, stream, offer online multiplayer and coop with friends from all over the world. etc etc etc. Ive found that the gamers my age (who grew up playing) are astounded and ecstatic about whats going on, and have not problem paying $60, or $70.00 for a game that will give us 9hrs to play. In my humble opinion, thats not small. Its not huge, but thats NINE hours of pure fun for seventy bucks, for a game that cost anywhere from fifty million or more to produce. Ive seen many gamers unhappy with the length and prices of games. Ive seen older gamers saying the industry is going to crap (old nostalgia arguments that transcend every form of entertainment media) and younger gamers saying games are too short for the money. Folks say theres not enough games at launch, not enough features on consoles, too many features on consoles and should focus on games (which in my mind should be a given, and that the company is just trying to do more and assumes we know games will be coming. Sadly, they were wrong). #Sony produced the hard to develop for, but amazing and diverse #PS3, and got roasted for it at launch due to price. They dropped backward compatibility and lowered the price. They release the #PS4 with different architecture and no backward compatibility and keep the price down. Folks are screaming at them for lack of backward compatibility. #Microsoft release a feature heavy #Xbox One with #Kinect bundled in for a hundred bucks more, and assume gamers would know that the focus would obviously be on games. They were wrong, and got ROASTED for all the features they wanted to include, and for a lack of focus on games. I will say that the DRM thing was a turn off, but that might have been folks jumping the gun on it. I dont know. So I guess Im wondering when a company listens to what people say, and when they just hold their own vision, because it is VERY obvious that it is insanely impossible to please everyone. For my part, Im more often than not in awe at what is going on on my screen. Granted, Im selective in the games I buy, so Im less often disappointed. Still, I think we are at an amazing time in gaming. Just my humble burbling, anyway. As always, if you feel you have something you want to get off your chest about games or the industry, feel free to send us a mail, or post it on our wall. Well pick the best one and share it next week! Do you agree with Ramon? Do you disagree? Let us hear it in the comments!
