4. Super Mario World, Bowser clown cart You knew a video game entry was coming. I first set my eyes on this game when I was about 4 years old, later receiving it as a gift boxed with my first game console ever, (and still the best!) Super Nintendo. My first memories of this game are hazy at best, but the final boss battle against Bowser sticks out in my mind. My introduction to video games was through my cousin and the original NES. I had a fascination with the first three Mario games having watched him play them as well as play a little of them myself. But I was still too timid to really dive right into them and try say, beating a level, nevermind a boss or the whole game. Beating a final boss was wasnt going to happen this early on. I wasnt skilled enough yet. I watched my cousin get to Bowser in Mario World and remember persistently telling him to beat it as quickly as possible. Not because I was trying to test him, but rather I wanted the high tension of the fight to be over and for everything to be ok. It can be really intense when youre 4 years old. The sky is adorned pitch black sans for the occasional flash of thunder, as you battle toe to toe with the Koopa King atop his homestead. The daunting smiling clown cart only worsened Bowser in his most terrifying form yet. In fact, Bowsers sprite in this game is downright menacing compared to future interactions. Theres something so perfectly ugly and threatening about his all green scaled skin, his orange fur mixed in that stands out in an unpleasant combination of colors, his crooked smile. Bowser in all the recent Mario games seems friendly and cute by comparison. When it was all over, and Peach dropped out of the clown cart, I remember a huge sigh of relief coming over me. The day had been saved. And maybe someday soon I too could tackle the beast that my cousin had emerged victorious against.... youtu.be/EG1ZMuDjs1E
