4.) There is absolutely nothing I could say about The Beach Boys PET SOUNDS album that has not been expressed hundreds of times before. Entire books have been written about the album and its cultural significance and creative process. A myriad of musical artists from many genres have admitted to its influence on their own work; everybody from Outkast and The Polyphnic Spree to Joni Mitchell and Ben Folds, Billy Joel and Miles Davis, Belle & Sebastian and Dr.Dre, Saint Etienne and The Flaming Lips. Paul McCartney has acknowledged his and John Lennons great debt to Brian Wilson, as it was his sonic experiements that directly led to the creation of both Revolver and Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. Brian Wilsons tale of parental abuse, mental illness (he is a diagnosed Schizophrenic), unethical psychiatric charlatans, acid trips, family dysfunction and endless lawsuits with fellow band members (before The Beach Boys 50th Anniversary tour came to an end last year, Brian was fired...via email...by his loving cousin and bandmate Mike Love!) has been told and re-told so many times, it has become a sort of California Dionysian Tragedy, that seems trivialized with yet another regurgitation. However, if you have a jones for this sort of obsession, knock yourself out: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pet_Sounds This link alone will boggle the mind... Rather than continue to bloviate, I figured I would simply offer what I believe to be the sincerest form of thank you to Brian Wilson and the debt I owe to him in the development of my show The Music you Remember. In attempting to select one song from the album, I found it was futile. So I figured I might let another obsessive do it for me: discovered on the deepest depths of youtube, here, for your listening enjoyment--direct from Paris, France!--is a note-for-note recreation of the album by someone known only as BEIGEMUSIC! According to this person, it took him/her (my feeling is that this is a guy, as 99% of the Beach Boy obsessives tend to be guys!) 9 months to put this together in their home studio...one month longer than it took B. Wilson & Company to record the real thing! It has a beautiful simplicity to it, not to mention it is a real kick to hear the lyrics sung with a pronounced French accent! Thank-You, Brian Wilson. Now, heres BEIGE MUSIC... youtu.be/07dhv3Mqdrc
