4 bets in Gawad Kalasag 2014 national awards come from Legazpi By Danny O. Calleja LEGAZPI CITY, Nov. 4 (PNA) – The search in Bicol for this year’s regional Gawad Kalasag championship has ended with the selection of six local institutions, four of them from this city which have been named as the region’s bets in the national level competition. Gawad Kalasag is a nationwide award given yearly by the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) in recognition of excellence in disaster risk reduction and management and humanitarian assistance. Kalasag stands for Kalamidad at Sakuna, Labanan, Sariling Galing ang Kaligtasan. Chosen by the regional evaluation committee as among Bicol’s entry to the national level competition were the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (CDRRMC), Barangay Oro Site, Buraguis Day Care Center (BDCC) and the Bicol Regional Training and Teaching Hospital (BRTTH), all from this city. The CDRRMC will compete in the Component/Independent City City category of the search; Oro site in the Urban Barangay Category; BDCC in the Early Learning Center (ELC) Urban Category; and BRTTH in the Public Hospital Category. Other bets coming from Bicol are the DQ National High School in Camarines Norte for the Public Rural High sSchool Category and the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (MRDDMC) of Sto. Domingo, Albay for the Fourth to Sixth Class Municipality Category. “We hope to surpass our last year’s number of winners in this year’s search with these four bets that we have,” City Mayor Noel Rosal on Tuesday told the Philippine News Agecny here. In the 2013 Gawad Kalasag Awards, the CDRRMC and Barangay Oro Site won the national championship in their respective categories to bring home the honors for their outstanding contributions in strengthening the resilience and adaptive capacities of the country and communities to disaster risks. “For the second time, we are confident on winning this contest because that vistory last year inspired us a lot into strenghtening further our disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) capabilities. We used the Php100,000 cash prize in equipping our communities with more disaster preparedness implements and awareness,” Oro Site barangay chairman Joseph Philip Lee said. The city and barangay Oro Site represented Bicol region in the national search after winning the regional level contests conducted by the search committee composed of the heads for the region of the Departments of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), Health, Education, Social Welfare and Development, Science and Technology, National Economic and Development Authority, Philippine National Red Cross, Philippine Information Agency (PIA) and Office of Civil Defense (OCD). The national search committee is composed of the secretaries or representatives of various agencies with of the DILG head as chair and OCD chief as vice chair. Committee members are from the DOH, DepEd, DSWD, DOST, Climate Change Commission, NEDA, PIA, National Anti-Poverty Commission, PNRC, Union of Local Authorities of the Philippines, CSOs, private sector and presidents of the leagues of provinces, cities, municipalities and barangays Launched in 1998, Gawad Kalasag is the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council’s recognition mechanism in obtaining sustained commitment and support by recognizing exceptional contributions of disaster risk reduction practitioners in strengthening the resilience and adaptive capacities of the country and communities to disaster risks. The recognition also aims to promote the spirit of volunteerism among agencies and individuals in providing the urgent need for help in responding to disasters. Apart from the honors, winners are given cash prizes amounting P100,000 each that should be spent for DRRM-related activities of respective local DRRMCs. (PNA) Doc
