$40 for an antibiotic?! Seriously?!: Heres something a little - TopicsExpress

$40 for an antibiotic?! Seriously?!: Heres something a little unnerving: After my accident, I was originally prescribed Cephalex 500mg and Oxycodone 5mg. I filled those Rxs through WalMart for a little over $5 for each. Flash forward one week: Follow-up @ Bassett Cobleskill. I was seen by a PA who molded a cast and changed the bandages. Flash forward again to this Monday morning approx 0330: I woke to radiating pain in the backside of my hand. Thinking I may have ruptured sutures or re-torn the tendons somehow while I slept, I unwrapped my hand. I was hit with a smell so rancid that it literally made me have to grab onto the couch arm, as I was on the verge of passing out. The color of my fingers and wrist area had taken on a purple/blue/black hue. I got in touch with some friends in the medical field whom all suggested that I immediately return to the ER. I was seen by a Dr who determined that there was an infection present, but also that the previous Dr (which really was a PA) had mis-molded the cast and wrapped the bandages so tight that it was creating a slow tourniquet effect. She re-molded a cast, had the RN treat the wound and infected area with antibiotics, rewrapped the wound area (correctly), and prescribed me Clindamycin 300mg (2@150mg each dosing). Now, onto the pharmacy, which again was WalMart: I present my Rx to the pharmacist. Now, remember, this is only one script for antibiotics. I am told that my Rx will be ready in approx 25 mins. I then ask what the cost is. $39!!!!!! Are you kidding me?!!! $39 for an antibiotic?! So, lets get this straight: an opiate based painkiller, highly addictive and is known to be commonly abused and over-prescribed, is readily available for just over $5. But an antibiotic, which can not get you high, has no addictive qualities, and is only prescribed for serious to severe infections, costs $39?! Add a dollar and its 5xs more expensive than the other antibiotic or pain killer! And they wonder why opiate addiction is on the rise!! $40 for an antibiotic!! Wtf?!
