40 years ago, I stood near the White House as Richard Nixons - TopicsExpress

40 years ago, I stood near the White House as Richard Nixons helicopter lifted off the South Lawn. The President had just resigned amid the Watergate Scandal, while Caryl & I were in DC on our first-ever vacation. I was a young News Director at WIZM in La Crosse, feeling like the luckiest guy in the World to witness political history. A couple of days earlier, on our White House tour, they were literally taking down the Nixon pictures, anticipating the inevitable. The entire experience was almost life-changing, as it totally underlined that Id made the right choice, becoming a radio news reporter. While I left the newsroom about ten years later after coming to Michigan, my heart and mind are really still there. I know its great sport to criticize the media, and political reporters--especially those who cover facets of a story not aligned with YOUR viewpoint. However, I have great respect for many of those reporters who work hard to dig up the facts, no matter which side of the political aisle they may offend. Investigative Journalism is an important part of our American system. And without it, Richard Nixon would have gotten away with Watergate...40 years ago.
