40 years ago this morning, 08-13-1973, my friend Edwin and i were standing on I-40 at Coors hitching a ride to California. Got a ride in less than 5 minutes in a hippie van with some great people and all their exotic birds. We stopped at the Grand Canyon for a quick hike, 17 straight hours, down to the bottom and back up. 140 degrees in the canyon and ice water in the Colorado River. Shock to the body for sure! Then on to the beaches of California. Fell asleep on Mission Beach early the morning we got there with nobody around and woke up at 8:00 AM with wall to wall people everywhere. Beach Time. What happens in California stays in California. While on this little trip we hitched rides in cars, vans, and freight trains with every type of people you could think of, even hobos on the trains. What a great time and experience that was.
