40 years ago this week, Secretariat ran the immortal Belmont race that captured the Triple Crown with an unbreakable record. This event will always remain emblazoned in memory as will the athletes who accomplished it. For me, it was finals week in school and I still remember sitting in anticipation of the starting gun eager to see if Secretariat would prevail. There was a hush as fear took over, thinking no horse could be so fast without having a heart attack. Years later a post mortem on the champion revealed that Secretariat had a 2.5x size heart, and exceptional pump which was the physical reason for the exceptional stamina and speed.
