40 years of marriage. That is what my parents celebrate today. What does 40 years of marriage bring? I will have to ask them that. What has their 40 year of marriage given me? That I can answer! 1. Life, a debt I can never repay. 2. Sister #1, Cassie Clum who teaches me subtly if I listen 3. Sister #2 Lauren Clum Phillips who can always make me smile and feel better 4. A family, the unit and tribe I have called my own for nearly 39 ears 5. A sense of home and belonging 6. Never wavering support, even when it must have been very hard for them 7. A cheering section at every accomplishment growing up 8. A place to have fun and laugh with my friends 9. Homemade Halloween costumes every year 10. Early travel experiences forming my addiction :) 11. Support through sports, camps and workshops 12. Attempt to have me understand the reason for school and staying in it 13. My first job 14. A role model as a manager and boss 15. How to send flowers to my date before big dances 16. How to earn my car 17. How to make a contract.....begrudgingly 18. Trust in going on trips with my friends, independence 19. Empowerment to go off to school when I really had not deserved to 20. Home-made Birthday dinners 21. Support through college with little interventions 22. Pleasant smiles for my first long term girlfriend 23. Understanding when I wanted to backpack around the world vs. go to classes 24. Sending money when I experienced my first overdraft 25. Flying out to be by my side when I got very sick 26. Allowing me to make my own mistakes 27. Welcoming me back home for my next college experience 28. Putting up with me as a student where my dad was president of the college 29. Shaking my hand and handing me my doctorate diploma 30. Moving from my friend to my Best Man 31. Embracing my new wife like their own 32. Becoming Oma and Opa in a blink of an eye 33. Supporting me as a new and opinionated parent 34. Loving us as we moved to another country with their new grand-baby 35. Visiting Costa Rica often and loving it, welcoming grand baby number 2 there 36. Understanding as we left Costa Rica only to move to Spain 37. Visiting Spain to welcome grand baby number 3 38. Showing fierce love and support through our rocky transition back to the USA 39. Listening through our parenting glitches with no judgement 40. Always being there, as my friends, confidants, advisers, and most of all, my mom and dad. 40 years can be so much to you and your life play mate, but it can mean the world to many people around you.
