41. And he said: Embark in it! In the name of Allah is its course and its mooring. My Lord is Forgiving and Merciful. 42. So the ark floated with them on waves like mountains, and Noah cried out to his son who stood apart: 0 my son! Ride with us, and do not be with the disbelievers! 43. He replied: I shall seek refuge in a mountain, which will protect me from the water. Noah cried: None shall be protected this day from Allahs judgment, except those to whom He has shown mercy. And the wave came between them, and he was among the drowned. 44. Then it was said: 0 earth, swallow up your waters; 0 sky, withhold (your rain)! The floods were made to subside, and the commandment was fulfilled. The Ark came to rest upon aI-Judi, and it was said: A far removal for the wrongdoing people! (According to Muslim tradition, the Deluge was local, confined to a region of the northern Tigris basin, rather than engulfing the entire world. And the Ark rested upon Mount Judi, not Mount Ararat - for the great height of Ararat would render the Flood a geographical impossibility. Mount Judi is located near the frontiers of modern Turkey, Syria and Iraq.) 45. Noah called out to his Lord, saying: Lord, my son was of my family. Your promise was surely true. You are the Most Just of judges. (Thus did Noah, despite his grief for his son, address the Lord in terms which avoid all hint of blame, but rather bespeak an exquisite satisfaction with His will.) 46. He replied: 0 Noah! He was not of your family; he was of unrighteous conduct. So do not question Me about things of which you have no knowledge. I admonish you that you should not behave as an ignorant man. (Noahs son did not believe in his fathers message. While his brothers Shem, Ham and Japheth boarded the Ark together with the other believers, this son stayed aloof, despite the evidence of the rain, and did not mount. The closest, most authentic tie among people is religion, not family or race. Hence, as the Holy Quran says, Believers are brothers, while a son and a father of different faiths are not so regarded. Thus it was that Noahs son had left his family.) 47. Noah said: 0 my Lord! I seek refuge with You lest I ask you for that of which I have no knowledge. And unless You forgive me and have mercy on me, I shall indeed be lost. 48. It was said to him: 0 Noah! Go down (from the mountain) with peace from Us and blessings upon you and upon some nations (that will spring) from those with you. (There will be other) nations unto whom We shall give enjoyment a long while and then a painful doom from Us will overtake them. 49. Such are some of the narratives of the Unseen which We have revealed unto you (0 Muhammad). Before this neither you nor your people knew them. So have patience. For the end is for those who are righteous. (The message is that the pure of heart, who work for Allah and their fellow-men, may be ridiculed and persecuted, but they will be sustained by His mercy. The outcome is for Gods loved ones. Next the Sarah turns to the comparable tale of the prophet Had, upon him be peace, who was sent to the people of Aad in Arabia. The story has been mentioned before, at 7:6572, where the intention was to draw a parallel between the Blessed Prophets treatment at the hands of the Makkan idolaters, and the life of the earlier prophet. Here, however, another point is emphasized: the insolence of Aads blind adherence to their false gods, even when a Messenger from God had been sent to them. Patience, however, will be rewarded, as it was in Noahs case, and the outcome is for the righteous.) 50. And to the (tribe of) Aad (We sent) their brother Hud. He said: 0 my people! Serve Allah. You have no god other than Him. You do nothing but invent (your other gods). 51. 0 my people, I ask of you no reward for this (message). My reward is due from none but Him who created me. Will you not then understand? 52. And, 0 my people, ask forgiveness of your Lord, and turn to Him (in repentance). He will send you the skies pouring abundant rain, and add strength to your strength. So do not turn away, guilty! 53. They said: 0 Hud, you have brought no clear proof, and we are not going to forsake our gods on your (mere) say-so, and we are not believers in you. 54. We say nothing but that (perhaps) one of our gods has possessed you with some evil. He said: I call Allah to witness, and you (too) bear witness, that I have nothing to do with what you ascribe (as supposed partners to Him), 55. Beside Him. So (try to) circumvent me, all of you, give me no respite.
