41 years. There have been ups and downs and most mistakes were my own. Thats how you learn. There are those that learn through observation, diligent study, listening when taught. Others just have to hit their thumbs with the hammer to learn about pain. I have been privileged to serve in an occupation that allows a freedom to operate and succeed at my own pace. Having supportive leaders (Vern Daley, Terry D Easter, Shane Morgan, David Ralston) allow me that freedom was also a reason for that success. It has been my last eight years, though, that have been the best years so far. I was able to shed a leech that was only a drain and impediment to my life and happiness. I again ran to the sounds of the guns with better men, paratroopers, than those that walk the streets with their false, unearned bravado. I met the best, most beautiful woman I know and she allowed me to be her husband. I was given the honor of becoming a father again to a rambunctious little sprite while still trying to teach teenagers, with varying success. I have always tried to act like I dont have friends but thats a lie. If youre able to read this, youre it. It may not be a large list but then again Im picky. I try to only surround myself with people who are worth a damn. I have declined requests because of that. Dont mistake this fact, though. Youre not lucky to have MY acceptance. I am lucky to have known you and have you as a friend. Thank you for the birthday wishes. I was trying to explain to my wife the difference between civilian and military friends last night. I explained that civilian friends will knock on the front door and call your parents Mister and Misses. Military friends will walk in, hug them both and call them Mom and Dad (right Megan Allen ). Im getting ready to return to FORSCOM and hopefully USARAK, if theyll have me. Its been a wild ride but it isnt over yet.
