41 years ago tonight my life changed forever as I wasnt feeling too good about now. I was in an ambulance being rushed to the hospital after Id just wrecked my Vega Pro Stock race car. I remember waking up in the ambulance and seeing the IV bottle banging back & forth from driving so fast to get me to the hospital. Then I heard the nurse say: Driver, driver SLOW down.....were losing him! That is when I realized it was ME they were talking about. A pretty scary night back then. They told Sarah IF I lived the night they would take me to the university hospital in Iowa City the next day. It was a long road back as I was in and out of the hospital for 6 months and had surgery THREE times to put my insides back together. But I came back and won, many times including a national event before turning over the driving to our son. But the big news from that story was 27 years later, 3 weeks after Id had cancer surgery my doctor told me this: I have to tell you something Mr. Johnson, when I got in there to remove your cancer tumor, I looked down and your small intestine was in upside down! But that wasnt all, it was also in backwards! Then the bombshell..... my doctor told me you were probably in such BAD shape from the crash those doctors probably didnt think you were going to live the night anyway, so they just kind of threw you back together! I got up and left when he said have a nice day! Are you kidding me? But its all documented in my cancer book. Sure makes feel good now to know I out living all those old doctors. And Im STILL racing and enjoying life with my 2 grandsons. Guess that means I won!
