41224 PORRERES - Song of the Sibil·la, is a medieval Catalán tradition. As it is performed in all churches and very difficult, there have been some modern modifications. Traditionally it was sung without a break acapella, but today because of its vocal demands, the Sibil·la often alternates the verses with a choir, and organ. Aside: actually a church is nothing more then a theater for a ritual, when the ritual is changed, then one needs to change the set. This church was compleded around 1700 at a time when the ritual was the Tridentine [Latin] Mass which was standard throughout the world until the mid 1960s, when the church changed some of the practices which originated during the Counterreformation. Up until around 1965, as a reaction to Protestants focusing on the Word the RCs focused on the Euchrist (priest with his back to the people at the altar, and preaching to the back of their heads from a pulpit, somewhere half way back along the side of the church. In 1965, the priest was turned 180º and a new pulpit was installed at the East end. This presents a problem if one goes back to church as theater. Note that here the singer has no microphone and one has no problem hearing her (I am at the back of the church filming this clip). However when preaching, the priest needs a microphone because the accoustics favor the old arrangement). The text, in medieval Catalá is a paraphrase of the end of days from the book of Revelations.
