43 years ago I had the privilge of driving Lou Rawls around the island of Okinawa where we partied for 2 days, before he was to perform for a big show at the Top Of The Rock Officers Club. As a radio announcer on KSBK, but only a low ranked enlisted Army man, the Officers club would not allow me in. Lou immediately told the Colonel at the door that I was his backup rhythm guitar player, and if I wasnt allowed in, there would be no concert. Needless to say, what a great guy, and what a night! Met up with him again years later in Underground Atlanta. Got in free. One of the smoothest and silkiest soul voices ever to grace the stage. He died of cancer at the age of 72 in January 2006.
