44 years ago today, Loretta Lynn scored her 4th #1 hit with Coal Miners Daughter. Called the most significant record of her career, she had wanted to write a song about her youth for many years. While waiting to do a TV show in Nashville, Loretta went to her dressing room with nothing better to do and starting writing off the top of her head. In a few hours, she had the song--with nine verses! Only six verses made it during the recording. The other verses that were dropped dealt with the interior decorating of her log cabin home, the many Kentucky floods and hog-killing day. The grammatically incorrect first line, Well I was borned a coal miners daughter, was left in. Producer Owen Bradley once commented, Well, that sounds like Loretta to me. She speaks her own language. She has her own tongue...and Ive always felt that she shouldnt be corrected to the point that you spoil that. I think thats her charm. I may be wrong, but if she did them all perfect, shed sound like a whole lot of other people. Loretta held onto the song before finally recording it. The autobiographical song became her nickname, the title of her book, the title of a movie, adorned her tour bus as a logo and was her CB handle. It typical Loretta fashion, she wrote in her book, It told everybody that I could write about something else besides marriage problems. Other songs that reached #1 on this date include: Brooks & Dunns Husbands and Wives in 1998 (their 14th #1 hit); Alan Jacksons Shes Got the Rhythm (and I Got the Blues) in 1992 (his 6th #1 hit); K.T. Oslins Do Ya in 1987 (her 1st #1 song); and Steve Wariners All Roads Lead to You in 1981 (his 1st #1 hit). Songs that reached #1 on this date on the Canadian country music charts include: George Straits I Cross My Heart in 1992 (his 17th #1 hit); Trios Those Memories of You in 1987 (Emmylou Harris 11th #1 song, Linda Ronstadts 3rd, and Dolly Partons 20th); and Loretta Lynns Coal Miners Daughter in 1970 (her 2nd #1 hit).
