45 Voll-Damm Festival Internacional de Jazz de Barcelona. From 19/10/2013 To 1/12/2013 The Voll-Damm International Jazz Festival of Barcelona, which is now in its 45th year, has announced the first confirmations of the program which this year will be held from 19th October to 1st December at different venues of the city, offering, as always, a program that covers all styles and events. The return of Chucho Valdés and his Afro-Cuban Messengers to Barcelona (Palau de la Música, 30th October) will be one of the main events this year. Valdés will present his new album, Border-Free, as leader of the Afro-Cuban Messengers. The following day, 31st October, the festival will open its Finestres to the delicate and emotional chamber pop of Tindersticks (31st October, BARTS). The same venue on Paral·lel will hold another two concerts presented at the festival: the drums group Jack DeJohnette, with sax and clarinet player Don Byron as special guest (15th November) and, a week later, the new project of the Israeli double-bass player Avishai Cohen, who will explore his lyrical world with the help of a string group (22nd November). ACS, meaning the spectacular alliance of Geri Allen, Terri Lyne Carrington and Esperanza Spalding, is another concert of the festival to be held at the Palau (14th November), together with a very special evening devoted to the work of the musical genius of the 20th century, George Gershwin (23rd November), with the pianist Alfredo Rodríguez as soloist and the Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès, conducted by Rubén Gimeno, which is the first time the orchestra has collaborated in the festival; apart from Gershwin, the programme of this concert also includes works by Frank Zappa and a premiere by Rodríguez himself. Finally, the closing concert will feature the new project of a couple of musicians who have exceeded all expectations: Andrea Motis and Joan Chamorro will present perhaps their most ambitious adventure to date, a big band with the best musicians on the Catalan scene and with arrangements specially created for the occasion.
