Power break Port Blair, Sept. 4 The power supply will be suspended in connection with replacement of ABC Cable at Bambooflat jetty area under the HT overhead lines which are required to be shut down from 8 am to 1 pm on Sept. 6, 2014. The areas to be affected are Bambooflat to Wimberlygunj, Wimberlygunj to Shoal Bay, Wimberlygunj to Ferrargunj and Ferrargunj to Jirkatang. Meanwhile, the power supply will be suspended at Old Pahargaon village, part of Dollygunj, Minnie Bay, School Line, Lamba Line and Airport area from 8 am to 2 pm on Sept. 6 in connection with replacement of damaged isolator at Old Pahargaon junction. Inter-school badminton tournament finals on Sept. 6 Port Blair, Sept. 4 The inter-school badminton tournament for U-14, 17 & 19 (boys & girls) is being organised by the Directorate of Education from Aug 30 at Multipurpose hall, Netaji Stadium. In the matches played today in under 14 (boys), SSS NCS and SSS Carmel defeated their opponents and have entered the final. Similarly, in under 14 (girls), SSS NCS and SSS VKV defeated their opponents and entered the finals. In the under 19 (boys), SSS KV-I and SSS KV-II defeated their opponents to entered the final. National nutrition week highlighting theme ‘poshak aahar, desh ka aadhar’ being celebrated by ICDS Port Blair, Sept. 4 A series of programmes marking the celebration of National Nutrition Week with the theme ‘poshak aahar, desh ka aadhar’ were organized by the ICDS Project Ferrargunj at various places in South Andaman. An awareness programme titled ‘importance of nutrition for better health’ was organized at AWC Brindaban while a programme on weight management and its importance through body mass index (BMI) was organized at AWC Tushnabad followed by a recipe competition and discussion on low cost food products the next day at Lal Pahar, Chouldari, which was attended among others by functionaries of health department. A mini exhibition on nutrition displaying low cost nutritious diets for different age groups and a quiz competition on nutrition was organized at AWC, Coffee Bagicha today which was declared open by Shri. Saw Mill at Betapur doubles its production Rangat, Sept. 4 The Govt. Saw Mill, Betapur has doubled its intake capacity by increasing its production. This is the result of running two shifts in the Saw Mill. Minister of State for Home Affairs visits Car Nicobar; holds meeting with representatives of Tribal Council Car Nicobar, Sept. 4 The Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, GOI, Shri Kiren Rijiju, along with the Member of Parliament, Shri Bishnu Pada Ray, Joint Secretary, Freedom Fighters Cell, Shri K.K. Pathak visited Car Nicobar today. The Minister visited the Tsunami Memorial at Big Lapathy to pay homage to the departed souls. He also visited the Photo Gallery at the Tsunami Memorial. Thereafter, he proceeded towards Kinyuka village where he saw one of the permanent shelters that was built as part of the Tsunami Rehabilitation package for the people of Car Nicobar and interacted with the Nicobarese population. Facilities for freedom fighters & families sought Port Blair, Sept. 4 The General Secretary, All India Freedom Fighters Samiti, New Delhi, in a letter written to the Lt Governor, A&N Islands, a copy of which has been released to the press, has requested for providing boarding facility for the freedom fighters and their families, visiting these islands, for at least one week. He also requested for providing concession in the ship tickets for them. He mentioned that the A&N Islands are place of pilgrimage for the freedom fighters and their families from different parts of the country who were incarcerated in the Cellular Jail during the freedom struggle. Hindi typing contest today Port Blair, Sept. 4 As part of the ongoing Hindi fortnight celebration, a Hindi noting & drafting competition was organized for the Gazetted Officers of A&N Administration in the conference hall of Secretariat today. A number of Gazetted Officers participated in the competition. Similarly, a Hindi typing competition will be held at 10 am for the staff of the Administration at in the Hindi Typing Training Institute, Secretariat on Sept. 6. Schools to function from 1 to 5 pm PM to address students on Teachers’ Day today Port Blair, Sept. 4 The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi will be interacting with the school children of India on the occasion of Teachers’ Day tomorrow (Sept. 5) from 3 pm to 4.45 pm. The PM’s address and question answer sessions with school children will be telecast live by Doordarshan through its national and regional channels. It will also be available through live webcasting on different platforms of Doordarshan and the website of Govt. of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development. Apart from TV broadcast, the viewing facility may also be available through Edusat, on internet access devices (computer/laptops/mobiles etc) and All India Radio. The Directorate of Education, A&N Administration has directed all the schools to make arrangement to assemble the children from 2.30 pm to 4.45 pm on that day so that the children may view or hear the Prime Minister’s address on TV. Delegation of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation interact with PBMC team Port Blair, Sept. 4 Councilors and officials of the Port Blair Municipal Council had the opportunity to exchange ideas, tools, successes and challenges with their counterparts from Chandigarh during an interactive session held at Peerless Resort, Corbyn’s Cove yesterday. The 25-member delegation of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, currently on a study tour to these islands, apprised members of the PBMC about civic ways and schemes implemented in Chandigarh and affirmed to put into practice some best practices adopted by the Municipal Council here.
