45 years ago tonight at 9:45 PM, I was sitting in front of a small television in the home of Aunt Dovie with my two cousins Earl and Marty Phillips and my brothers and sisters to view the most important event of the 20th Century: the first step by mankind onto the surface of the moon. Earl had placed a small Polaroid Instamatic camera onto a couple of throw pillows in front of the TV in order to capture an image of the first step. With collectively held breaths, we watched as events unfolded and Neal Armstrong slowly descended the ladder from the LEM and set his foot down on lunar soil. We knew it was an important happening, yet we didnt know just how important it would be for the health, safety, and welfare of mankind. Im proud to be an American! We may not have been first into space, but we were the first to achieve the goal of reaching the moon first. Thanks to the people at NASA, we have satellite TV, microwaves, kidney dialysis machines, CAT scans, MRIs, rotary blood pumps, disposable diapers, fiber optics, bar codes, freeze dried food, cordless power tools and appliances, ear thermometers, fire resistant clothing, thermal gloves and boots, fire detectors, and thousands of other innovations. We did all of this in a little over half century. Just imagine the possibilities in the next half century! Image what we could accomplish if we were to work on achieving global peace, eliminating hunger and disease, etc. as hard as we worked on getting to the moon!
