47 Days With The Phoenix: Updates, Answers & Meditations In The Key of Phoenix Leading Up To Her 2nd Birthday Party. Day 4, in which Phoenixes in motion tend to stay in motion. It is true for all babies, but especially so for Phoenix that stimulation at an early age promotes crucial for brain development. Children who are stimulated early perform better in school, are more socially and emotionally competent and have a much higher verbal and intellectual development. No pressure, parents. It makes sense: the more sights, sounds and physical input at this critical early age, the more neuronal connections are activated in the brain, the more circuits and pathways are created for later use. I talked last time about how theres much we are still learning about the brain, but so far as we understand now, up to 90% of our neural connections are made before age 8. Reading, playing and experiencing at this early age pays dividends for the rest of our lives. So we make sure Phoenix leads an active lifestyle. Between us and the nurses we take her for 1 or 2 walks a day--to the park, to oldtown Monrovia, wherever--just something to get her out of the house, into the sun and around people. She loves crowds and noises--loves the stimulation. Shes been to Bourbon Street in Louisiana at night and soaked in the sounds of (very drunk) people. Shes been on road trips to SF and Tucson. Shes been hiking and swimming. We took her to swimming in the pool last Saturday and to the beach last Sunday--the little white girl is starting to look rather tan. Monrovia has flocks of wild parrots that like to roost outside our house and argue metaphysics (probably). If we take her outside shell give her opinion to the parrots and respond to the dogs in the neighborhood. She has PT (Physical Therapy) twice a week, OT (Occupational Therapy) twice a week, Infant Stimulation twice a week, Child Life once a week, Infant Massage twice a month and Music Therapy twice a month. She has a parade of people coming in and out of our house every day whose focus is playing with her, getting her moving, getting her interacting and building her strength. We should all be so lucky to have someone come in, massage and serenade us and mold our body into yoga poses while we relax on the couch.
