It opens rather slowly and deliberately, building character and unfolding layer by layer. I found I identified more with Ben, the ex-Navy SEAL who pursues a relationship with the young and extremely vulnerable (but emotionally closed) Lara. One thing that did jump out at me about the book was the prose; smoothly written and well constructed, not getting in the way of the unfolding tension and romantic elements. The book also asks us to question the ethicality of its main character, in Lara dealing with an extremely dark event that affects many of the decisions she makes. With a strong sense of location, character and tension, this is a truly unique and highly enjoyable book.
