5.0 out of 5 stars Unique and Mature Fantasy Writing, February 5, 2014 By Walter Rhein Veil of the Dragon (Prophecy of the Evarun) (Kindle Edition) Tom Barczak’s “Veil of the Dragon” is a fascinating fantasy tale that evokes the work of many canonical fantasy writers, while still being unique and different in its own right. The language reminded me a lot of Janet Morris for its smooth, lyrical quality. The story reminded me of Arthurian legend, where the specter of the dragon always hangs in the background though its actual, tangible presence is evasive. The story follows the exploits of Chaelus who is brought back from the dead to claim his familial heritage. He is accompanied by Al-Aaron, a servant knight who both protects Chaelus and is saved by him on several occasions. I was especially drawn in by the dream quality of this book. It floats along in a non-traditional fashion and creates an effect more commonly seen in poetry. I’m curious to re-read this novel and consider the various characters (especially the oft-mentioned Dragon) from various metaphorical perspectives. My inclination is to believe this rich text will yield some curious ideas when approached in that fashion. If you’re interested in fantasy writing in the vein of R.A. Salvatore, this book isn’t for you. I’m a fan of Salvatore, and there is certainly a time and a place for that type of escapism. However, I’m also a fan of J.R.R. Tolkien and Janet Morris, as well as the historical fantasy texts (Arthurian legend) which have given birth to this genre. “Veil of the Dragon” firmly belongs in that second group.
