5:15PM Update -- Ive made a few tweaks to my prediction for Sundays chance for winter weather. As moisture spreads northeast Sunday morning and moves into Southern Illinois by the afternoon, surface temperatures will be near freezing. Surface temperatures will be the key to how precipitation falls. Generally south of Route 13, I think temperatures will likely be above freezing for the bulk of the event resulting in rain. Further north from Jackson, Missouri to Marion, Illinois some uncertainty on temperatures remains. I expect in this thin band, some ice accumulation will occur, but temperatures may bounce between 32˚ & 33˚ resulting in a mix of rain as well. A line from Fredricktown, Missouri to Mt. Vernon, Illinois will likely remain at or below freezing for much of the event resulting in the highest amounts of ice accumulation. With 0.30-0.50 of liquid falling, ice accumulation of 0.10 is expected in this thin band, but isolated higher totals are possible. Impacts from this event include: Backroads and side streets will likely become ice. Interstates and main highway bridges may become slick. Sidewalks and driveways becoming icy. Use extra caution when driving or walking. Precipitation will begin to exit Monday morning, with a few ice pellets or snow flakes possible as the column cools.
