5-23-2014 . To all members of HFRRF, below you will find a great article that I received by a reporter who chose to remain anonymous . It really gets to the point about the attacks of this Mayor on city employees. Todd Clark. Anonymous Houston Journalist: For a liberal politician the Mayor has become the Queen of Corporate Welfare. Research efforts are underway at all levels of government in Houston and Harris County to pinpoint how to effectively solve the pension shortfall. The SEIU (Service Employees International Union) has been pushing downtown business owners to pay their real value of their properties rather than the appraised value. Public employees and rank and file property owners have something in common, they have been victims of an unfair tax burden. The City needs to come to grips with reality that a two tier property tax system will not stand once people understand what has happened. Police, fire and municipal workers have been directly affected with their pensions. On a second tier, small business and property owners have also been affected because they picked up the burden or no relief was offered to them, said George Scott, Public Policy Researcher. If the pension shortfall is approximately 2.7 billion dollars, that would be fixed in a matter of a couple years. How? If the Harris County Appraisal District would determine the REAL value of a few commercial properties and hold accountable those owners to pay up. Harris County hired Jim Robinson (and experts) to establish this. They are working toward something. Under this leadership, The City of Houston has been giving away a lot of tax breaks and 380 deals. Utility companies, power companies and agricultural exemptions are reaping the benefits, while firefighters are having their futures threatened. Theyve fought to save your homes and structures. Dont make them fight to get their compensation.
