5/5 - The Shining Director: Stanley Kubrick (1980) Here it is, my favorite horror movie of all time: Kubricks mysterious, disturbing The Shining. Let me try and give you something that resembles a plot synopsis. Jack (Jack Nicholson) and his family head to an isolated hotel to maintain the place during the off-season. Here, paranormal forces - either old Native spirits or ghosts from a previous murder or the ghost of Jack himself... huh?! - spin Jack into violence while his son has surreal, disturbing visions. Yeah, it is all pretty insane. You can not watch this film like you watch other movies, and the more times you watch it, the more you get it... well, sort of. There are so many things I love about this masterpiece, though. For one, every viewer has a different experience. People have picked over the meanings of this movie ever since the day it was released - the excellent documentary Room 237 masterfully captures the hysteria. The documentary ends up not concluding anything, which is exactly what makes it perfect. Secondly, I love this film due to Jack Nicholsons manic, unhinged performance. DeNiro was considered for the lead, and despite his skills, I stand by my opinion that no other actor could have pulled this off. From his opening scene to the closing moments; Nicholson takes us on a journey through depression, creative angst, and ultimately, the ultimate case of cabin fever mania. You may want to buckle your seatbelt for this one.
