5.9.2013 The Jungle Lore: Part II The Man-eater of Govindagarh The first report of human killing came on December 1st when the tiger made a woman, named Bitani its first victim in village Papra. The woman had gone to the nearby forest to collect fire wood, when the tiger pounced upon her and dragged her away into the dense forest. The half-eaten body was of the women was found by a Charwaha (animal keeper) the next day. Thirteen days after, this, a very exciting and amusing but to great extent, unusual incident occurred. In the village Budgauna, near Rampur Naikin, on January 13th, at the day-break, Jagdish Baiswar, to his great surprise, found a tiger sleeping in his abandoned cow-shed. The news spread like a wild fire and hundreds of curious villagers – man, women and children – flocked to have a look at the unusual and uninvited guest. All efforts by the villagers to drive away the tiger failed. Ultimately, a messenger was sent to the district headquarter, Sidhi. A couple of hours later, the forest persons arrived along with a photographer who took few Photographs. Ultimately, nothing but gun-shots compelled the tiger to leave the cow-shelter. On the whole, behavior of the tiger was unusually strange, as, in spite of the villagers making lot of hue and cry, the tiger not only did not leave but also not attacked anybody. After this, on January 13, 1987, in the forest of village Digauda, the tiger seriously injured a 14 year boy. In the same region, one after the other, ten more people were injured, but it could not be ascertained that it was the exploit of the same man-eater tiger or some other animal. ---To be continued
