5-9-2014 EHV-1 update from Stillwater Equine clinic: We are feeling optimistic and think (hope) that it is time for one last summary (we are now 15 days from the last cluster of cases): This outbreak of EHV-1 non neurotropic was a two month (March and April 2014) episode mainly involving one disciple (barrel 12/14) and involved 7 states (MN, WI, ND, SD, IA, KS, NE). We do not know that all of these cases are tied together but the timing and disciple of the horses involved is suspicious that they might tie together. Some of the keys to stopping this outbreak were the following: Early detection of EHV-1 infection horses: Some effected barn owners mentioned that they had the worse “cold” go through the barn this winter. Early detection (swabbing) of the virus may have prevented or slowed this outbreak. We rarely swabbed horses in the past but we will likely be much more proactive in the future. (As a side note one of the suspect horses that was swabbed was found to have EHV-4 and one was found to have Rhinitis). Early detection and quarantine of EHM (neuro) and separation of EHV (febrile horses): Key in stopping the outbreak was a 21-28 day quarantine of the barns with EHM horses, and separating any EHV horses (febrile) to stop the domino effect. EHM (Equine Herpes Virus Myeloencephalopathy) is the neurologic form of EHV. The no travel period was likely helpful. Education(biosecurity) and communication (social media) were very helpful.
