#5 Favorite Album / EP of 2014 - Wand - GANGLION REEF As many of you know, 2014 is the year I decided to add a little more “psych” music into my life. I think this happened because I found some amazing bands that (unlike some psych acts) don’t just try to discover how long they can hold one chord. I found bands that pull melodies and harmonies together like The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Doors and Love did. Not that these new bands I discovered this year were the first to ever try this. I loved the Elephant Six Collective’s efforts of fifteen years ago, and often the bands that I found myself loving this year owe a lot to Apples in stereo and Olivia Tremor Control. Take Wand for example. Wand seem to be influenced by Olivia Tremor Control along with Nirvana, RIDE, Status Quo via Camper Van Beethoven, and My Bloody Valentine to name a few. I just stumbled on to this album one day (perusing albumoftheyear.org) and found some youtube audio tracks instantly fell in love with it. There was only one problem. There seems to be almost no promotion or publicity on the band at all. And forget Rhapsody - they’re not on there (and the vinyl didn’t come with a download code either)! They’re not even on Facebook! So except for the visits to youtube, every time I’ve listened to the album has been on vinyl. Yes, that’s the way it should be! By the way, if you’re a Ty Segall fan, Wand is signed to his record label, GOD? They also toured with Segall, but apparently didnt come to Houston... https://youtube/watch?v=SzVEWmi_27U
