5 Fees you didn’t know you had to pay Buying items these days arent as straightforward as many would like. There isn’t just one straight price or cost but a myriad of fees thrown into the mix sometimes. While there are many fees you may be aware of, such as cover charges, processing fees and many more, here are some lesser known fees you’re most likely paying. Handling Fee If you love shopping online, youd know that there are times when shipping fees can make a huge difference to the price of an item, especially if purchased from overseas. But beyond the exorbitant overseas postal rate, some sellers add a ‘handling fee’ which basically means you are paying them for packing and heading to the post office to send you a parcel. Some go a step further and include packaging fees which is the price of the box, brown paper and bubble wrap. What a way to milk every sen off a transaction! Cake Cutting Fee So youve booked your venue for the wedding and you think you can save costs by getting your relative to bake the wedding cake for you. Until you realise that the wedding venue has just hit you with a ‘cake cutting fee’ and even charge you per slice to cut the cake! This is to encourage you to use the venues wedding cakes. The audacity to charge you for cutting a cake on their premises! Restocking Fee Many items these days can be refunded, and while you may think you will be getting your full money back if you do want a refund, there are instances when being fickle-minded will cost you. The restocking fee was enforced especially by electronics and computer stores because once its been opened and used; it can no longer be sold as new. But now many retailers have such fees as well so keep that in mind if youd like to make a refund! Sometimes, the fee really is for something as silly as putting the can of beans back on the shelf. You’re probably better off keeping the item. Cancellation Fee While cancelling for hotel bookings or airline flights usually results in a cancellation fee that most are aware of; there are many more cancellation fees you can be charged: cancellation of gym membership, or some subscriptions, or of banking products. Most people just want to cancel some services and rarely look at the final payments they make allowing the sneaky cancellation fee to creep in. Always ask if there is such a fee and how you can go about avoiding it. Sometimes it means holding on to the service for a certain period of time. However, before you agree to this, calculate if you are really saving money or are truly better off simply paying the cancellation fee. Early Return Fee If it isnt bad enough to get fined for returning the rented car you got late, you could also be fined for returning it early. Rental car companies claim that this is because returning it early breaks the contract that was made and any discount you got has been voided. So if youre going to rent a car, check with them to see if such a fee is being imposed and be sure to return the car on the day agreed upon.
