5 Q&As you need to read. CAST 1 VOTE- CASERTA 1. Do you think expeditionary learning is a good idea? Yes. I feel the planned incubator school using EL will be an exciting atmosphere for our children to learn and explore. The new school, slated to open in August of 2015, will allow students to become more engaged in the learning process. As a member of the BOE I would closely monitor the programs development and implementation. 2. What do you think needs to be done to the school calendar to ensure students meet the states 180-day requirement? The county schools have no choice but to meet the state mandate for attendance. The BOE has done well with receiving input from parents, faculty and staff to approve a calendar to make this happen. I feel this should be an ongoing process with open discussions. I do not however, support a Year-Round school calendar. 3. Should the number of Advanced Placement courses available to students be increased? Yes. AP courses help the student prepare for college, giving them the chance to accelerate college courses and enter college at the sophomore level. Cabell County is home to Marshall University, if not already in place, programs allowing the growth of AP courses could be a joint effort. Students should have an opinion on the classes they are able to take. If students would like more AP classes in subjects such as the Arts and Music, then I believe it should be available to them The training that AP teachers must complete enhances their teaching skills for all courses including the AP courses. Statistics from the College Board, show that students who take advantage of the AP courses are much better prepared for college as evidenced by higher graduation rates, grade point averages and multiple majors. 4. How can schools be made safer? I support using prevention Resource Officers in our schools and promoting anti-bullying campaigns. I also encourage continued evaluation of the safety programs within each school. I would lobby for meetings with all agencies and professionals responsible for the safety of our students along with residents, students and educators to review the agenda items submitted by United States Attorney Booth Goodwin during the Summit on West Virginia Safe Schools. I have worked with U.S. Attorney Goodwin on projects within the city and would not hesitate to call upon his expertise. 5. Do you think enough is done for academically talented students? We need to make every effort to be aware of each students progress rates and provide avenues by which to enhance their individual growth and development. CCS does their best to try to support our academically challenged and talented students, but I feel there is always room to help even more when needed. We should look into more options to ensure we are helping these students as much as possible
