5. Soda If you can’t get through the day without a can or two of cola, you should be concerned about more than just the sugar found in it. Studies show that the caramel coloring commonly used in cola induces cancerous changes in animal cells, leading to thyroid tumors. Consumer watchdog The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) reported that sodas from popular brands Coca-Cola, Pepsi Cola, Dr. Pepper, and 365 Cola contain unsafe levels of a chemical that gives them their caramel color. The chemical, 4-methylimidazol or 4-MI, is believed to cause 15,000 cases of cancer within the United States population. It was also found that the amount of 4-MI found in these sodas was more than 4 times the recommended limit of California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment. There are suggested limits to the amount of this artificial coloring you can consume each day, but it only takes a small amount of soda to exceed the recommended quota. A 20 oz. bottle contains more than 10 times the maximum suggested intake. Even diet sodas are no better for you, as they contain the same artificial colorings as their full sugar counterparts. Additionally, diet sodas have artificial sweeteners which are also believed to be carcinogenic. For instance, consumption of saccharin is linked to bladder tumors, while aspartame is linked to brain tumors. In another study by So Mueller and his colleagues, more than 60,000 men and women who enlisted themselves for a Singapore Chinese Health Study, were monitored for their diets for 14 years to see any links to cancer. They discovered that people who drank two or more sodas in a week had an 87 percent higher chance of developing pancreatic cancer. Your best bet is to steer clear of all sodas. Choose a diluted glass of pure fruit juice if you want a sweet but healthy drink. Oh, and make sure it’s organic!
