5 TIPS TO PREVENT INGROWN HAIRS by Dr Davin Lim Laser and Cosmetic Dermatologist Ingrown hairs are irritating, red and usually painful bumps that are one side effect of shaving or waxing. In some cases ingrown hairs occur because you are just predisposed to having this condition. The best way to treat ingrown hairs is to avoid getting them in the first place. Here are my 5 tips for the week to help with the problem of ingrowns. 1. Exfoliate. Exfoliating the skin helps remove dead skin, and unevenness that can trigger the growth of ingrown hairs, so keeping your skin smooth before shaving is a excellent method of reducing the risk of ingrowns. Don’t exfoliate before shaving; instead exfoliate 2-3 days prior to shaving because it helps minimize irritation. A simple Buff Buff exfoliator will help. 2. Use some fruit acids. A simple compounded solution of glycolic acid can reduce the thickness of the dead skin layer, essentially this is known as a ‘peel exfoliation.’ 5%-8% Glycolic in Sorbelene is my favourite recipe. 3. Shave correctly- always shave with the grain and not against the grain of growth. This isn’t as smooth, but will help reduce ingrowns. Always use a gel and not a cream as it provides more lubrication- preventing nicks and cuts. My choice- Gillette Gel or Nivea Gel. 4. Moisturise lightly- if you are prone to ingrowns, the last thing you want is to coat a thick layer of moisturiser. Use a light moisturiser such as aqueous cream or one of the La Roche Posay body moisturisers. 5. Laser hair removal – without doubt the best solution. Why? No hair- no ingrowns. Laser hair removal is super affordable, starting at just $25. We use the absolute best in laser technology to deliver permanent hair reduction. Have a chat to our nurses for more information.
