5 Ways How Android Is Killing Apple #5 Hardware diversity: The very point where Apple fails before Android is the unavailability of hardware options. Apple is still stuck in the last generation hardware whereas Android manufacturers are conceiving new technologies as soon as it evolves. The Samsung Galaxy S4 or HTC One for instance, offers a lot better hardware than iPhone 5. Moreover, Apple’s relatively high price point is keeping emerging markets away while Android is giving them options to enjoy a true Smartphone experience at low cost. As these markets evolve into wealthy ones, it will be difficult for Apple to find a place. #4 Innovation among competition Even though Google distributes the Android OS, every manufacturer is adding on some flavors into their Smartphones. This competition is nurturing innovation, while Apple is still stuck with the policy of “one size fits all.” Consider HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4 for example. While HTC innovated more in areas of sound and user interface with its Boom Sound, BlinkFeed and Sence 5, Samsung went with tracking softwares, multitasking functionality and camera interfaces. Meanwhile Sony, another leading Android vendor went with waterproofed Android devices which made new benchmarks. Above all, the Android manufacturers are also producing various versions of the same device, like Galaxy S4 Zoom, meant for photographers and S4 Active, meant for people who want a waterproofed version of their flagship. But unlike this, the internal competition is too slow in Apple and hence the innovation too. #3 Developer community A strong developer community is growing along with the popularity of Android. A biggest example for this is the availability of custom ROMs for Android like CynogenMode and Paranoid Android. Developers are dedicating their time to give users different levels of user experience. Some of these developments were so strong that certain instances were adopted into the official Android OS. There are also instances when developer forums have discovered and patched the flaws found, like an exploit found recently in Samsung Exynos chips. Another biggest complaint on Google Play from Apple fans is the presence of crude, unpolished apps. Moreover, the revenue that a developer generates from the Apple’s app store is more than Google Play. The fact is true. However the amount of money generated by an app store doesn’t convert to consumer interest and also Android has more polished versions of all the popular apps that are present in Apple’s store. #2 Open source Android scores high in this part. Being an open source operating system, third party developers are free to use the OS to build customized products for the users. But when you come to Apple, one of the most closed operating systems in the world, the word ‘customization’ doesn’t even exist. The open nature of Android had helped it to get into many areas you couldn’t have imagined. There are gaming consoles that run on Android, there are washing machines, fridge and even micro-wave ovens that are powered by Android. #1 Google Google, as a company won’t be having any direct benefits from the Android. But just think about the amount of work Google puts into it, the data and services Google possess and the applications like Google Maps and Google Now, which the company developed utilizing the data. Also Google is working on interesting projects like Google Glass, which will fuel the acceptance of Android to a wider mass. Meanwhile Apple, as a company recently had none interesting projects of these kind or they donot have the amount of data like Google to play with.
