Where to begin? An audit of each village covering its arable land, its water sources and resources, its irrigation infra, the optimum green cover it needs, its existing pastures, the cattle and livestock. An audit of its health care infra, its drinking water sourcing, its sanitation needs, its schools. Next an appraisal of villagers vis-a-vis their changing livelihood patterns and emphases. Next a blue print for melding core agricultural activities with recommended ancillary economic activities that fit into the local resource and skill bases and to examine how far the core economic activities can be nudged towards agri-based local small industries -- with the kind of crops to be promoted depending on the local topography -- or nudged towards non-agri-based ancillary economic activities. Next skill transmission and skill development centres within reach. The delineated details cover an exhausting lot of distance. The core emphases of the ideal village must first be decided. What kind of a life should a village support? Self-reliant, self-sufficient or the one that is looking to urban centres for inspiration and ambition. A village that should reinvent Indias quiet but vibrant life, reinvent the larger Indian life that is fulfilling and sustainable -- far away from mall-mounted slow-death traps that urban centres and cities are fast slipping into.
