5 lessons learned during this 1st real corporate experience: (1) Do NOT focus on whats in your job description. HRs have anyway no clue about anything... Do what matters & bring more value to your group. And this is in 99% of cases not in the 30 lines from the job description. (2) SPEAK UP: escalate to Big Boss if something important is not working well. Propose solutions & a way forward to solve issues, propose yourself to implement changes. Upside (being seen as a free-thinker with massive balls) far outweighs the downside (being fired or ostracized for challenging the system). (3) VOLUNTEER for important projects that are beyond your duties. Help un-connected people in other sides of the organization succeed, even if that makes you leave the office much later. Do it for FREE, and with no agenda. (4) Learn to SAY NO: to the not-so-important things, even to friends. Do the IMPORTANT stuffs FIRST - Do the so-called URGENT stuffs LAST. (5) Give CREDIT to others & make the performing people below you shine. Make them visible from leadership. Make their names circulate within the company. Use your network to help them land their dream jobs.
