5 things that may help prevent cancer Cancer is the leading cause of death worldwide, and the second leading cause in the United States. The good news is that about 30-40% of these cancers are preventable through a healthy lifestyle. On June 24, GE Healthcare, in collaboration with the American Cancer Society, hosted a panel of experts in nutrition, physical activity and cancer prevention in an open webinar to discuss issues relating to and correlations between healthy habits and cancer prevention. American Cancer Society’s Colleen Doyle, MS, RD, Director of Nutrition and Physical Activity; and Alpa Patel, PhD, Strategic Director, Cancer Prevention Study-3 were panelists, along with GE Healthcare’s Jeff Hersh, PhD, MD, RAC, Chief Medical Officer, Healthcare Systems. During the discussion, panelists spoke about many ways we can modify our daily habits to help prevent cancer. Five key takeaways were: • Eat more fruits and veggies. About 90% of us do not get the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables per day. • Exercise. There is a scientific cancer connection between inactivity and increased cancer risk. The American Cancer Society recommends 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise, or a combination. Find out more here. • Control your weight. Portion sizes, especially in the US, have increased dramatically, an are associated with weigh gain. Avoiding sugar-sweetened beverages is aslo a good way to reduce your calorie intake to help control your weight. • Limit sun exposure. Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers. There are many ways to limit sun exposure such as applying sunscreen liberally, and wearing a wide-brimmed hat. • Be an advocate for cancer prevention and healthy lifestyles in your community. Spread your knowledge and awareness to your friends and family and get involved in ways to further the knowledge of cancer risk factors
