5 things to know. STR Global, the sister company of Hotel News Now, released hotel performance data for December for four global regions. The data compares December 2013 with the same month a year earlier. Middle East/Africa: The region posted positive results in all three key performance metrics. Occupancy increased 3% to 59.5%; average daily rate rose 4.2% to $180.65; and revenue per available room increased 7.3% to $107.44. Europe: Hotels in the region had a strong month, with occupancy up 3.6% to 56.5%, ADR increasing 5.3% to $131.84 and RevPAR climbing 9.1% to $74.47. Americas: RevPAR rose 6.5% (to $56.80) with a 2.8% increase in occupancy (50.5%) and a 3.6% rise in ADR ($112.38). Asia/Pacific: The region experienced mixed results for the month. While occupancy remained flat at 66.3%, ADR dropped 3.7% to $125.91 and RevPAR declined 3.7% to $83.46. By 2030, more than 50% of growth in global outbound travel will come from Asia/Pacific, and 49% of all global passenger traffic will be within Asia/Pacific or between the region and the rest of the world, according to a report from TripAdvisor and The Boston Consulting Group. Travelers from China will account for 40% of Asian outbound travelers by 2030, and, according to the report, within the same timeframe China will likely overtake the United States as the world’s largest domestic travel market. By 2030, Chinese urban travelers are forecast to take 1.7 billion domestic and outbound trips annually, up from 500 million trips in 2012, and will spend $1.8 trillion on travel and tourism. Within a year, one in five travel bookings made online in Europe will be done through a mobile device, according to PhoCusWright. The travel research firm presented its findings during the recent FITUR conference in Madrid. The volume of bookings through mobile devices this year is nearly double the volume (11%) during 2013. Travelers from the United Kingdom are most likely to use mobile devices to make reservations at 21% of bookings, followed by Italy (20%), France and Germany (18%) and Spain and Scandinavia (17%). The American Hotel & Lodging Association outlined the focus of its national advocacy efforts in 2014 on behalf of the U.S. hotel industry. The ambitious platform includes advocating for immigration reform, changes to the Affordable Care Act, passage of the Jobs Originated Through Launching Travel Act, elimination of patent trolls and extension of the terrorism risk insurance program. The association also pledged to work at state and local levels to defeat passage of living wage initiatives and advance policies to fight for tax parity between hotels and their online competitors. Global hotel companies are expanding their extended-stay brands in Europe as shifting economic trends drive demand and the long-dominant and well-served U.S. market begins to mature, writes HNN contributor Benjamin Jones. “I think it’s a given that Europe is underserved by the product compared to the United States where there are already an estimated 350,000 extended-stay rooms,” said Mark Skinner, partner at Highland Group Hotel Investment Advisors. Marriott International, Accor and InterContinental Hotels Group are just a few of the major multinational hotel companies widening their extended-stay offerings in Europe.
