5 years ago today I received a call that changed our lives - TopicsExpress

5 years ago today I received a call that changed our lives forever. A call that , to say, turned our world upside down, would be an understatement. My newly turned 16 yr old daughter had been out for a few minutes with a friend for a timmes run as her friend needed to talk. She was a passenger in the vehicle that was involved in a single vehicle accident. The car flipped and rolled. Amys neck was broken at the C6/7 level. She would be quadriplegic for the rest of her life. As I stood by her hospital bed watching the medical team work hard to save her life, I watched the pain and agony on my young daughters face which in turn reflected my own pain and agony. Over the next weeks and months, Amy pushed hard to regain any sort of function. She was paralyzed from the neck down. We were told shed never do much of anything again including being able to feed herself. Little did the medical team realize her tenacity, strong will and determination that would prove them wrong. Amy is a survivor. She is also a fighter. She was released from the hospital 6 weeks post injury and informed to work on her upper body strength that she would be in a wheelchair for the rest of her life. Amys journey was just beginning. Through research & medical help available only in the U.S., we began to learn what it is we needed to do to maximize her quality of life. Intense exercise. And a phrase Amy has used since her accident...believe & all things are possible, never ever give up. Over the past years Amy has worked hard with conviction. She was able to regain hand strength and in turn returned to cooking, baking ,doing her hair etc...all the things shed been told shed never do again. We have worked on her leg strength. Muscles are strong, she has been able to move them for a number of months now. She has been able to stand independently on her own. In March 2014, for the first time in 4 years, Amy was able to stand & walk with the bionic suit. Something she was told she would never do again. On a bright warm sunny day ( or rainy depending on how determined she is) you may see her flying down the street on her scooter. Ahhh...yes, independence!! Amy has by far, proven the medical system & the text book theories wrong. This is a long, hard journey. There have been tears, anger , frustration but there has also been lots of laughter & joy. Amy has taught so many so much. She is a true inspiration to her family & to those who know her. As I reflect on this day 5 years ago, I would like my precious daughter to know how very proud I am of her and how far she has come. She has taught me, inspired me, the love & pride I feel is indescribable. She continues to push forward for more each and everyday. Always with a smile on her face. And always with her family right here beside her. I love you baby girl with my whole heart & soul. Keep up the great work, youve come so far. Believe my love, and all things are possible! Happy Believe Day 2014 XoXo
