50 MORE BEST 12” SINGLES OF THE 80’s: No.40 – INXS – Need You Tonight (Mendelsohn Extended Version) (Mixed by Julian Mendelsohn–7.15) After joining INXS in 1977 Michael Hutchence had a pretty good idea that he was destined for international ‘rock god’ status a good few years before anyone else in Australia had caught on, and it would be even longer before the rest of the world would eventually catch up with the eventual release of their 1987 album, ‘Kick’. Hitting big all over the world, reaching the Top 3 in the US and spawning four US Top 10 singles, including ‘Need You Tonight’ which launched the album with the band’s only US No.1. Things didn’t go quite so smoothly in the UK, and although the ‘Kick’ album would eventually climb all the way to No.9 and spend more than 100 weeks in the UK album chart, ‘Need You Tonight’ was a flop on its original release, stalling at No.58 in October 1987. Subsequent single releases didn’t fare much better, ‘New Sensation’ gave the band their first UK Top 40 entry, peaking at No.25, but the next single, ‘Devil Inside’, also missed out on a Top 40 placing. ‘Never Tear Us Apart’ looked like it might be the final nail in the coffin, peaking at a lowly No.24 in June 1988, but thankfully someone at the UK label made the decision to re-release ‘Need You Tonight’ and it climbed all the way to No.2 more than a year after its original release, fuelled by some UK targeted remixes from Ben Liebrand and Julian Mendelsohn. The ‘Mendelsohn Extended Version’ starts with Hutchence’s seductive, whispered, “Come over here,” before fully exploiting the tracks already super-funky bassline and driving guitar riffs, to deliver a hypnotic, almost Balearic, dance-floor thrill-ride.
