50 years ago today, I came out of school to find my mum, who always met me at the school gate, wasnt there! I started to walk home and about two thirds home my mum met me! She was at the time nine months pregnant with my sister Jill Inez. Mum was obviously distressed worried she hadnt met me, but in pain and quite badly struggling. At the age of 6, I was too young to realise what was wrong! She was obviously in labour! But despite this she walked, almost ran to meet me! When we got home she explained and we went through the sequence we had planned that I was to do, when baby was coming! We werent on the phone at home then, so I phoned from my next door neighbour, my dad and the midwife. I was so excited I was going to meet my little brother or sister at long last! I remember praying: I secretly wanted a sister! At 7.50pm my dad arrived by which time the midwife had arrived and I was warming baby clothes on an airer in front of our fire guarded protected gas fire. I did try to stand at the bedroom window( we lived in a bungalow so the bedrooms were downstairs) to peep in at my mum with the midwife, but was shooed away! I didnt have long to wait, at 8.10pm I heard a babys cry and very soon after my dad and I were allowed in to see mum with my new baby sister: whom I had named Jill. She had a mass of yellow hair!! And my first words about my new sister were: I thought babies were born with no hair! So much hair you could have mopped the floor with it!!!!! So Happy 50th birthday Jill Matthews, my youngest and only surviving sister by blood, have a lovely day! And loving memories of my beloved mum who almost ran to meet me at 9months pregnant in advanced stages of labour! It is so true the older you get the more you appreciate your parents and their love xxxxxxx
