50 years ago today, when I was 11 and in the 6th grade, I remember well. It was a Friday and I was eager for school to let out, as the family was due to go down to Elmira for the weekend and visit my aunt, uncle and cousins. It was afternoon when the speaker in the room came to life and the principal announced that President Kennedy had been shot and killed. They also said that school would finish early for the day. The entire class and the teacher were stunned. I remember no one saying a word, complete silence. I rode home on the bus, which was also almost entirely silent. My family got ready for our trip and still not much was said. I was glued to the television all weekend. On Sunday, when they were moving Oswald, I was watching and saw Jack Ruby shoot him live on TV.
