50 years ago tonight, Americans were coming to the end of one of the darkest days in U.S. history. Has it really been 50 years since that awful day in Dallas? Those of you who are of an age to remember, does it seem like five decades have past or do you remember it like it was last night? We can talk forever about JFKs personal failures which were not widely known of back then. We can argue about whether he was, or ever wouldve become, a great president. And we can debate forever whether Oswald acted alone or had an accomplice up the street. What cannot be debated is that on that day and the three days that followed the country changed forever. A young man with so much hope, so much charisma, and so much promise, cut down in the prime of his life. That is why we still care. He is forever frozen in our minds at 46. That flock of brown hair never went grey. We never saw him with grandchildren. What would his post-presidency years have looked like? Even if he wins reelection in 64, he wouldve been just 51 when he left office in January of 69, still a young man. So sad, so very sad. A life truly unfinished.
