51 years ago, a President was a victim of a sinister plot that some believe was hatched in secret through the halls of power and had many conspirators that may never be known. We Americans live in the shadow of that terrible moment. It has occurred to me in recent days that the seeds of the end of democratic rule reached its first depressing milestone in Dealy Plaza. The trajectory from that instant on November 22, 1963 proved that there are powerful and dangerous forces that would rather have our people and this American civilization be run by fear or edict or a noisy and unruly mob, as their trust in free people and our institutions was always of want, always broken in their eyes. Tomorrow, free people in this community will gather as they have over many years to conduct freedom friendly endeavors. My tormented mind and tortured soul will again be overcome with sadness over the tragic events that day, one for which I was yet to be born, but is seared, as it should be, into every Americans DNA, that even being President does not ensure personal safety, and if John F. Kennedy were alive today, he might be shocked that every one that has followed him has advanced and centralized power in such a way that our system is rapidly taking on the attributes of something quite different from representative democracy. The tyranny of a few can indeed distort and undermine the lofty yet practical desires or intentions of the many to be free from the lunacy that has become the norm, where evil hides behind the cloak of good, where small men with big jobs ruin just about everything, and by extension, have already undermined this nation and the stability and integrity of our country. But your people in Woodside will continue in earnest to reconcile word with deed, to do what needed to be done years ago, and to go onto the end. And was it not President Kennedy who spoke these words Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country? Are we living up to those ideals? We will attempt to in Woodside.
