51st ISNA Convention Call for Proposals Deadline is April 7, 2014 Generations Rise: Elevating Muslim American Culture Important Information (Please read carefully before proceeding) We’re excited to receive your parallel session suggestion for the 51st annual ISNA convention to be held in Detroit, MI from August 29 – September 1, 2014. This year our theme will ask how we, as a community, can live out our faith and values in a way that elevates our spiritual and social condition in America. We will highlight thinkers, activists, artists, and leaders from different generations and backgrounds who are positively shaping Muslim American culture. So, we’re excited to read and consider your parallel session suggestions as we prepare for a memorable convention. This year, we seek to make the convention even more responsive to the needs of individuals and local communities. Our parallel sessions will offer real solutions to real challenges. Those suggestions that meet this vision will be given preference. The ISNA Convention Program Committee (CPC) has developed 6 tracks that reflect subthemes that we want our parallel sessions to be built around. We plan to interweave spirituality and family issues into all of these tracks. We invite you to offer suggestions that best fit into the following tracks: Track I: Effective Engagement This track will highlight the importance of service as an essential part of Muslim culture, and best practices in serving those are in need of assistance. Track II: Healthy Culture This track will feature critical conversations and offer examples on how to develop and produce culture that is reflective of Islam’s highest spiritual and ethical values. Track III: Social Trends This track will examine some of the broader social issues and forces shaping American culture today, and how Muslims should be responding to these trends from an Islamic perspective. Track IV: Healing Divides This track will look at how we repair relationships after conflict in our families, local communities, and more globally as we strive for greater unity in the midst of our diversity. Track V: Masjid Development This track will focus on best practices to make our Mosques even more welcoming, relevant, and responsive to the needs of its congregants as a reflection of healthy Muslim culture. Track VI: Education This track will reflect on the high importance given to knowledge in Islam and will offer best strategies in pursuing holistic education for all generations of Muslims in America. Please note: We’re working hard to bring you a convention that is efficient and sufficient. As such, there will only be 5 parallel sessions for each track. The CPC may need to make necessary changes to your proposal in order to meet the broader goals of the convention program. Please do not take it personally. Please provide biographical and contact information for all your proposed speakers, but do not make any commitments to them. ISNA will contact chosen speakers directly. Speakers and moderators will be provided with complimentary registration from ISNA. All other expenses (travel, hotel, food, etc.) must be arranged separately. isna.net/annual-convention.html
