52 of the 55 signers of the Declaration of Independence were deeply-committed Christians. The other three all believed in the Bible as the divine truth, the God of scripture, and His personal intervention. This same first Congress formed the American Bible Society. Immediately after creating the Declaration of Independence, the Continental Congress voted to purchase and import 20,000 copies of scripture for the people of this nation. It cannot be emphasized too strongly that this great nation was founded -- not by religionists -- but by Christians . . . on the Gospel of Jesus Christ. -- Patrick Henry Do not let anyone claim to be a true American who attempts to remove religion from politics. -- George Washington, in his Farewell Address. America was born a Christian nation - America was born to exemplify that devotion to the elements of righteousness which are derived from the revelations of Holy Scripture. -- Woodrow Wilson May every citizen in the army and in the country have a proper sense of Deity upon his mind and an impression of the declaration recorded in the Bible, Him that honoreth Me, I will honor, but he that despiseth Me shall be lightly esteemed (I Samuel 2:20). -- Samuel Adams, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. We have no government armed with the power capable of contending with human passions, unbridled by morality and true religion. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other. -- John Adams, our second president, in an address to military leaders. The foundations of our society and our government rest so much on the teachings of the Bible that it would be difficult to support them if faith in these teachings would cease to be practically universal in our country. -- Calvin Coolidge The only foundation for a useful education in a republic is to be aid in religion. Without this there can be no virtue, and without virtue there can be no liberty, and liberty is the object and life of all republican governments. Without religion, I believe that learning does real mischief to the morals and principles of mankind. -- Benjamin Rush, Signer of the Declaration of Independence. God who gave us life gave us liberty. And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are the Gift of God. That they are not to be violated but with His wrath? Indeed, I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that his justice cannot sleep forever. -- Thomas Jefferson The Christian religion, in its purity, is the basis, or rather the source of all genuine freedom in government. . . . and I am persuaded that no civil government of a republican form can exist and be durable in which the principles of that religion have not a controlling influence. -- Noah Webster, author of the first American Speller and the first Dictionary.
