#53 My last two weeks in Portland mainly involved me working as many shifts as possible while packing up the last few belongings I had and working with Tym to get him up to speed to be BOMF!s new drummer. On a Monday after my last night of bartending in the Mexican joint, Tym and I loaded his motorcycle and my half stack into Brents truck and headed south to Sacramento. We spent our last morning in Portland loading the truck and having coffee and cigarettes with Andy and Carl, then headed west on Hawthorne towards I-5 South. Once we were underway, we had one last stop to make at my parents house in Eugene, to have a bite to eat and say goodbye. We didnt know what we were headed into, we just knew that Brent and Michael had had a bit of luck and found us a house. We arrived in Sacramento fairly late in the evening. For an October night, I thought it was exceptionally warm, with the temps in the low 70s, but I had no idea what Sacramento was like weather-wise. We loaded our belongings into the house and hit the sack after a long day of travelling. The next day, I woke up to a note with directions to Brents work and sunshine. Being from Oregon, I was used to overcast and rain in October, not sunshine and temps in the 80s. Tym and I dressed and headed out on our motorcycles to have a cuppajoe and figure out our new game plan. While the weather may have been beautiful, the neighborhood was not. We had moved into Del Paso Heights, a neighborhood in North Sac which was, to say the least, economically depressed; but for the first time in my life, I could say that I lived in a racially diverse neighborhood. Growing up in uber-white Oregon, I welcomed the diversity and was happy to be one of the more whiter people on the block. Unfortunately, it didnt take long to figure out that I was more excited to see people of color than they were to see me. That didnt matter, though, because I was in a new city and I had a lot to do. So, Tym and I made our way to Brents work and had coffee and a pastry while we perused the local paper looking for work. I generally had an easy time of conning people into giving me work, so I was confident that some poor sucker would eventually give me a job. I also had an easy time meeting girls, and I was confident that I would have little problem finding company. I had no idea I was about to be very wrong on both accounts.
