54 YEARS OF INDEPENDENCE AND 100 YEARS OF NATIONHOOD: SETTING THE NATIONAL AGENDA FOR THE NEXT MILLENNIUM Congratulations to all Nigerians on the 54th Anniversary of our independence from colonial rule. In the 100 years of our existence as a nation and 54 years of independence, we have made remarkable progress in various aspects of national life. We may not yet have achieved a developed nation status, but we certainly have left the league of under-developed nations. The wheel of development may be grinding slowly, but the fact remains that it surely grinds. As we end one century and millennium, we begin another. This is the right time for us to re-assess our lives; communities, States and Nation. We have to work harder to get to where we aspire to be in the next 50 and 100 years. There is much work to be done in building citizenship and nationhood. Corruption remains a monster we must tackle. The quality of education – knowledge, skill and character – is in dire need of reform and improvement. The task is to build a more civil society with a culture of service, security, democratic institutions, properly maintained infrastructure, freer people, a better-educated workforce, and stronger economy. It should be a society where political rights and responsibilities are much more broadly distributed, where government is accountable and responsive to citizens and one in which we could use our education, talent, ambition and ingenuity to take better advantage of economic opportunities. So while we take a deserved rest on this Independence Day, let us not rest on our oars. Happy Independence Anniversary Hon. Nimi Walson-Jack Leader, Rivers Converge Governorship Aspirant, Rivers State.
